Futureproof Festival happens on the unceded territories of the Musqueam (xʷməθkʷəy̓əm), Squamish (Sḵwx̱wú7mesh) and Tsleil-Waututh (səl̓ilwətaɁɬ) Nations. The Space Centre sits in Vanier Park, at the old village of Sen̓áḵw, where families lived until the barges came and moved them out. Anthony Joseph of the Squamish Nation has pointed at the towers going up next door and told us his people are finally home.
Every Vancouver AI meetup at the Space Centre has opened the same way: a speaker from the host Nations at the front, a song, a teaching, then the rest of us. Not a line we read off a card. A relationship we keep showing up for. The festival opens the same way on Wednesday night, with Anthony, before anyone says a word about the future.
