The story

This started with a room full of people who wanted a better AI conversation.

Vancouver's grassroots AI community has spent years gathering at the Space Centre: filling the room, screening films, testing ideas, arguing in good faith, and trying to make sense of what this technology is doing to public life.

Futureproof Festival is what happens when that energy becomes an international festival. Opening night. Two program days. People building with AI and people with good reasons to challenge it. Nobody has to pretend the future is already decided.

An AI festival that wants the skeptics in the room.

People with good reasons to question AI belong at the table before boosters make every decision. Critique is part of the program, not a problem to manage.

AI is already culture.

Film, art, ethics, education, public life, and practical building share the festival because AI escaped the software industry a long time ago. The rest of us live with what happens next.

From October 28–30, 2026, the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre fills with people making AI, questioning it, teaching it, turning it into culture, and living with the consequences. Critique sits beside curiosity. Practical work sits beside film, art, and an honest conversation about what AI is doing to public life.

I would say, even those who are critical or skeptical of AI for good reasons, we need those people at the table the most. Otherwise, it's just gonna be the hypers and the boosters that get to make all the decisions of the future.
If you talk about working on your violent AI misogynistic racist systems, it's a much different approach that gets taken. You can't just push it off till later.
