Angelica Lim directs the ROSIE Lab at Simon Fraser University, where she builds robots that read faces, gestures and tone of voice. She once lived with a robot at home for six months and filmed what happened. She’ll get into what living alongside these systems is doing to the people who do it.

About Dr. Angelica Lim

Angelica Lim is an Associate Professor in the School of Computing Science at Simon Fraser University and Director of the ROSIE Lab, where ROSIE stands for Robots with Social Intelligence and Empathy. She is a Canada CIFAR AI Chair affiliated with Amii. Her research builds AI models of nonverbal communication, including facial expressions, body gestures and speech prosody, grounded in collaboration with psychologists, cognitive scientists, clinicians and neuroscientists. Previously she led the Emotion and Expressivity teams for the Pepper humanoid robot at SoftBank Robotics. She holds a PhD and an MSc in Computer Science from Kyoto University and a BSc in Computing Science from Simon Fraser University, and her work has been featured by the BBC, TEDx and Forbes.
